The mother of a 23-year-old Alabama woman who was killed by gunfire in an alleged incident involving two males, including former Crimson Tide basketball star Darius Miles, broke her social media silence about her daughter's passing.
DeCarla Cotton said on Facebook that Jamea Jonae Harris, who was shot and died, refused to communicate with Miles.
She posted about the news from WBRC-TV with the caption, "Took my baby life because she wouldn't talk to him!!!!"
Following the incident, Miles, 21, and Michael Lynn Davis, 20, were detained and charged with capital murder.
Darius Miles and his family are "devastated today by the murder of Jamea Jonae Harris," according to a statement given to Fox News Digital by attorney William C. White II. "Although Darius has been charged with contributing to this tragedy, he insists in his innocence and eagerly awaits his day in court. There won't be any other statements made at this time as our company conducts its own inquiry."
According to Capt. Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa Police Department, Harris was a passenger when the driver of another vehicle contacted campus police near Bryant-Denny stadium at at 1:45 a.m. and said that someone had shot into the vehicle and that he had fired back. One of the suspects was hurt, although his injuries are not life-threatening. Who was harmed was not disclosed by police.
After it was discovered that Miles was allegedly involved in the shooting, he was let go from the men's basketball team. He suffered an ankle injury earlier on Saturday and was declared out for the remainder of the year.
The safety and wellbeing of the campus community are, according to the university, a top priority. We express our sincere sympathies to the victim's family and friends and express our sorrow over the incident that happened yesterday night near campus.
"We appreciate the prompt and comprehensive action taken by emergency response teams and law enforcement, and we will continue to fully support the ongoing inquiry. The latest accusation against student-athlete Darius Miles was brought to our attention; he has since been expelled from the university and is no longer a part of the Alabama men's basketball team."
According to AL.com, Miles was seen sobbing and spoke with someone outside the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
He could be heard saying, "I love you." You have no idea how much I love you.
Miles was present when Alabama defeated LSU earlier on Saturday, 106-66.
